This blog is a sounding board for my research ideas and musings on aspects of more intelligent communication with IT systems, in general, and complex information systems / knowledge-based systems, in particular. Any such system should be able to explain at every point in time why it prefers solution “A” over solution “B”. Furthermore, it should be able to tell about the meaning of used concepts, and where its information came from („knowledge provenance“).
Explanations are part of human understanding processes and part of most dialogues, and, therefore, need to be incorporated into system interactions in order to improve decision-making processes. I am not so much looking at such problems from a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) point of view, but from an artificial intelligence research point of view.
As information systems grow more and more complex, computer support is needed. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important for computer systems to have advanced explanation capabilities. My research is dedicated to develop such explanation-aware information systems.
